Intramuros

One of the many places that you should visit when you’re in Manila is the Intramuros. Literally, Intramuros means ‘within the walls’. It is considered the oldest district in the city of Manila. At one point, the whole of the Intramuros was referred to as ‘Manila’.

The ancient walled city Intramuros, within Manila proper, built by the Spanish during their 333 years of rule. During World War II it was occupied by the Japanese. Intramuros was nearly leveled during the Battle of Manila by the shelling of US and allied forces retaking the Philippines. Only the church of San Augustine remained untouched. Much of the ancient city has since been restored and is a popular tourist and historical city that is alive with people and a testimony to the fortitude of the Filipino people.
